At the heart of many family law cases are the issues of child custody and visitation. As a parent, your goal is to do what is best for your child. When you choose Smith & Nowlin as your law firm, we will make that our goal as well. We have more than 35 years of experience in handling divorce and child custody matters. We know how to put our experience to work for you.

There are essentially two types of child custody:

  • Legal custody gives the parent the ability to make important decisions about the child's health care, education and welfare.
  • Physical custody gives the parent physical control of the child.

Each of these types of child custody can be further divided into joint custody or sole custody. Joint means that the rights and obligations are shared between the parents. Sole custody means that only one parent is responsible for the child and has the authority to make decisions for the child.

We will help you obtain the custody most appropriate for you and your child. To do this, we take the time to learn about you, your child, and each of your needs. We are ready to listen to and address your concerns. As we move forward, every step we take will be one step closer to meeting your goals.

At Smith & Nowlin, we are available to address child custody and related issues, including support and visitation, at every stage in the process. If you are currently going through a divorce, we can stand by your side. If your divorce has been finalized but factors have changed and you believe you should be allowed to seek modification to your child custody agreement, we can help. If you believe that a modification is unwarranted, we can help as well.
